Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, he moved to New York in the late 1970s and drew his first famous works in white chalk on the empty black advertising panels of the subway, turning the city itself into his studio. What began underground quickly reached the world’s great museums, yet Haring never lost his belief that art belonged to everyone, opening his Pop Shop so his images could stay within reach of the public. His work fused the energy of graffiti and street culture with a deeper current of activism, confronting the AIDS crisis, apartheid, and the nuclear threat with the same clarity and urgency that ran through every line he drew. Working across murals, paintings, and prints, he made images that feel instantly alive, all movement, rhythm, and human warmth. Since his death from AIDS-related illness in 1990, his foundation has continued his commitment to children and to communities affected by HIV, and his work hangs today in collections from MoMA to the Whitney, as beloved and widely recognized as any art of his generation.
