United Kingdom Velodrome Framed photographic print, Matt Ben Stone – Riding the Boards. The images from this series are captured using a 10×8 large format view camera and shot on black and white analogue film. Hand processing using a dip/dunk processing tank, and then in the darkroom using a large format enlarger to hand-print the images as a silver gelatine print. Uniquely printed in a darkroom, hand-printed the negative as a silver gelatine print, these are not mass produced inkjets and show signs the craft. Riding the Boards documents velodromes across the United Kingdom, – hallowed spaces for cyclists. Unique 1/1 framed artworks by the photographer. Hand printed on traditional wet print darkroom photographic paper 20×24. Presented in a bespoke frame (70cm wide x 57cm height x 5cm depth). Print is float mounted to 1mm high quality aluminium. Museum spec anti reflective art glass. Complete with security wall mount fixings. Riding the Boards is a photographic series of velodromes across the United Kingdom. The images are void of riders, allowing the viewer to experience indirectly the same meditative space encountered of a track cyclist. The wooden boards bear marks and scars from previous races. These’memories’ become highlighted within the images – the marks become tracing imprints that have the telling signs of victory and loss within the sport. The images are captured using a 10×8 large format view camera and shot on black and white analogue film. It’s a beautiful fine grain film, perfect for capturing all the minute detail within the wooden textures. The whole process is very traditional in the photographic sense. Shooting with a plate camera requires a black out cloak in order to view the image on the ground-glass screen, hand processing using a dip/dunk processing tank, and in the dark room using a large format enlarger to hand-print the images at 20×24 as a silver gelatine print. The bespoke frames are handmade by the photographer to a museum grade standard. A lot of love and care goes in to shooting something this meticulous that the process itself becomes part of the image’s narrative. The physical slowness of the process is a stark difference to how the photographer shoots most of his commercial work, but there is still a place for large format imagery; especially as we realise that speed nearly always comes at the expense of craft, similar to the making of a custom bike.
