A peaceful canvas on board by painter Paul Corfield. Working side-by-side in the studio with his daughter over the summer of 2018 led to the charming new works from Paul Corfield. Beginning with a sketch and a sepia wash, the painter then applies oils to make the colours of his rolling hills stand out. Originally starting as a night scene, Paul then painted two versions before trying out the arrangement of the sun setting in the distance. Speaking on this piece, Paul says: The night versions were some of my favourites from anything I’ve ever painted so it was great to have another opportunity to reimagine the scene. I particularly like how the area of clouds around the sun came out as they were a bit of an experiment half-way through the painting. Prefer collection / inspection in person. King Con was a difficult piece for Paul. It represented the inner turmoil. Paul generally starts a painting with a relatively clear concept in his head as to what he wishes to achieve However, on some occasions, he has a number of ideas vying for his attention and the composition can change as the painting develops. A case in point is King Con, watch the video on YouTube to find out the hidden messages of the piece and the painting process. As illustrated within some of the video footage, you can sense that he is really struggling to achieve whats in his minds eye and he experiences real anguish and frustration. It then becomes something of a battle as he finally wills his ideas onto the canvas. It is his dogged determination that overcomes the challenges if something is not working, he will persevere until it comes right in the end. King Con is a powerful statement piece highlighting the symbol most redolent of the Covid-ridden years, the discarded masks creating more detritus in an ever more polluted world.
