This is quirky drawing of an airplane-shaped airship with a nod to the Michelin man, from a series of prints by Dutch artist, René Boin (1953). What the number 98 represents on the stripes of the Dutch national colours is a mystery. You can see the coast and a small village in the background. Boin has developed a quirky style and loves to work with pencils. His favourite subject matters are the countryside, travel and sports. As with the other screen prints, this one is also signed, number 272 out of 400. René Boin (1953) trained at the art academy (ABK) in Arnhem. He specialises in drawings and paintings from extremely small (drawings on watch faces) to extremely large (murals). He has had exhibitions since 1978. A characteristic feature in his work is the distinctive use of colour pencils in combination with paper texture, bright colours and subjects in a continuous movement. People, animals and ordinary objects are put in a unexpected context or suggest an action in the immediate future. His work will often prompt a smile. And it will certainly give food for thought. Artist and author Robert Jones was born in Cornwall; the beaches and cliffs of Newquay were his childhood playground. His seascapes and marine subjects are particularly well known. He studied painting with Francis Hewlett and Robert Organ at Falmouth College of Art and continued to paint whilst teaching in various schools including three-years at A. Neill’s Summerhill School. On returning to Cornwall, he continued to draw and paint throughout a spell as skipper of fishing boats, working around the Cornish coast before becoming a part-time tutor at Penzance Art School and Falmouth College of Art. He spent seven years fishing around the coast of west Cornwall, which gave him an intimate knowledge of the sea. His paintings are concerned with atmosphere, changing weather and light conditions on land and at sea. Robert spent a number of years teaching in schools, but a successful exhibition at Newlyn Orion Art Gallery encouraged him to concentrate on his painting and reduce his teaching commitments. His paintings have been widely exhibited throughout the UK and abroad. A series of his sea paintings was included in the second exhibition at Tate St. He is represented in a small number of galleries in Cornwall but has recently acquired a small gallery space/showroom in Hayle – Carnsew Studio. Offered is a rare 1956 print, one of the series of 13, each printed using pochoir technique in a limited edition of 200, on Richard-de-Bas wove paper, as included in the portfolio Femmes et Faunes, published by Au Vent D’Arles, Paris, sheet 51,5 x 42 cm (20 ¼ x 16 ¼ in) with the frame. Signed by Picasso on the plate. One of the series of 13 prints issued by. However, interestingly, the imagery of this picture, if compared to the imagery of the “standard” print, looks somewhat misaligned, i. While all the lines meant to be neatly connected, here you can see that some of them have big gaps in between (please see the rhomboid shapes in the’shoulder’ areas for example), while some cross each other (such as lines at the bottom of the torso, etc). What I also find interesting is that the frame maker Ernest Wheatley was apparently serving the top end of the market, and the label applied here was likely used in 1950 – 1961 before he incorporated his company in 1961 and added Ltd. To his company name, which immediately coincides with the period when Picasso created the drawing and issued the prints – please see the information about him from the site of the National Portrait Gallery. I wonder if this could be one of the original artist proofs, and the final imagery was made looking “tidier” on the subsequent prints? Please refer to the photographs for further visual information.
