Henry Wilkinson (1921-2011) Curling Bonspiel limited edition coloured etching
Henry Wilkinson is best known for his painting and prints of sporting dogs, but his Scottish curling etchings from the 1970s are an unsual delight. After graduating from the Royal College of Art in London, Wilkinson learned engraving while working for the gun maker Hammond’s of Winchester, developing his craft under the mentorship of the esteemed printmaker George Vernon Stokes. Wilkinson undertook every aspect of his printmaking, delegating nothing even to the extent of creating his own printing inks. This drypoint etching is number 38 in an edition of 100, signed in plate and signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. It is in excellent condition with no staining or spotting and good strong colour retained, especially the yellows and reds of jumpers and hats. The top edge of the wooden frame is very slightly bowed, otherwise the frame is sound and in good condition. Mounted, framed and under glass. Frame 59cm x 48cm, mount aperture 42cm x 30cm, plate impression 40cm x 27.5cm. I sell a wide variety of affordable pictures, with a focus on Scottish and English 19th and 20th Century paintings and prints.
